FARGO - In 1960 Congress ordered the construction of a 4.8-mile earthen dam across the Suwannee River to boost water levels in the Okefenokee Swamp to prevent devastating wildfires. It was in reaction to fires in 1954 and 1955 that burned more than 80 percent of the 438,000-acre wildlife refuge and threatened local communities.read more
