Conventional energy-dispersive or wavelength-dispersive x-ray analyses are generally only able to determine the identity of particular elements in a specimen. Conversely, common vibrational spectroscopies such as infrared or Raman optical methods are very sensitive to structure and chemical bonding, but their spatial resolution is limited by light diffraction to several microns, which is far larger than the scale on which many phenomena of interest occur.
